The Life of Verent J. Mills Dr. MillsGreat is Thy Faithfulness
Chapter 1
V.J. Mills as a young adult     Dr. Mills was born on May, 12, 1913 in Birmingham, England. At age 6, his family moved to Manitoba, Canada. His childhood was dotted with many mischievous incidents until one day his mother sat him on her lap. It was his mother's tear flowing down onto his neck that convinced him he needed the Lord to enter his heart. That day he asked the Lord to forgive all of his sins. Amazingly, from that point on, his life was never the same. In fact, his conversion and subsequent behavioral changes were so convincing that even his father who for the longest time refused to go to church, became a Christian five months later.
At age 18, he completed high school, with plans to further his study to become a diesel engineer, a decision that pleased his father, an Engineer for the Canadian Railroads. But the Lord had a different plan for him. Through a missionary on furlough, he learned about the devastated condition and the desperate need of the Gospel in China during a church rally. With the faith of Abraham he was the first one to respond to God's calling--to leave his family, friends, a promising career, country, and go to a land he knew nothing about.
On October 1, 1931, his family saw him off at the train station. His father, still bitter about his decision, said: "Son, don't bother to write to me and tell me how you are suffering. But anytime you change your mind about staying in China, I will personally come and bring you home". With a bible, an extra pair of shoes, two changes of clothes, and $5.50 in his pocket, he boarded the train for Vancouver, British Columbia, where he set sail to China on board the ship Hiya Maru.
